Card Making - How to Get Started

Home » Home and Family » Arts and Crafts - Money Saving Ideas and Tips

If you do not know how to make a card then you can use books available through the library, borrow ideas from commercial or handcrafted cards, and customize them for your own purposes, they are an excellent source of ideas. The following list includes some ideas:

You can use following things for making the front of a card

  1. Potato prints of Christmas trees and stars.

  2. Hearts, ladybugs, sailboats, or simple flowers etc.

You can also use stencil or ink stamp for making cards.

Collage can be effectively used while making cards and they may consist of cutting from photographs, wallpapers cards, etc.

You can also sew simple fabric or paper shapes cut out of the card with threads of a contrasting color.

Torn shapes can be pasted to a card. Using a pretty textured paper, drawing a picture outline on the back, and carefully tearing it out and pasting it to the front of a card is a nice way to use recyclables.

Artistic cards can be made with simple designs punched out with a nail and then embroidered with metallic thread, yarn, or ribbon.

If a photo of the person to whom you're addressing the card is pasted on the inside, with a window cut out on the front so the person's face is visible will make the card touching.

You can layer a picture on top of a piece of contrasting paper, slightly bigger than the picture and slightly smaller than the card, to give the picture a frame.

You can employ cotton to make slightly three-dimensional objects and can paste them on the cards afterwards.

Cutting left over from the center of your layer of cardstock can be used for card fronts.

You can also glue dried flowers or leaves on cards.

Christmas trees on cards can be made by gluing on small, flat cedar tips that looked like miniature trees, add a gold star at the top of each tree, and glue on a few sequins for decorations.

Simple shapes like squares or rectangles can be made easily from a scrap of wrapping paper.

Small ribbon bow of the appropriate color can be used for making borders of the cards.
